En8 steel is a medium tensile steel supplied in the black hot rolled or normalized condition. En8 steel is characterized by good weldability, good machinability, and high strength and impact properties in either the normalized or hot rolled condition.
En8 is an unalloyed medium carbon steel used in applications where better properties than mild steel are required, but with an eye to the cost, thus avoiding purchase of a steel alloy. En8 can be heat treated to provide a good surface hardness and moderate wear resistance.

Britain | Bs970 | EN9 |
Germany | DIN | CK55 |
USA | AISI | 1055 |
Germany | Werkstoff No. | 1.1203 |
En9 has a degree of carbon content which enables it to be flame or induction hardened to produce a high surface hardness and excellent wear resistance. It has a tensile strength that makes it suitable for components where abrasion resistance rather than toughness is of primary importance.

---|---|---|---|---|---|
Content (%) | 0.50 - 0.60 | 0.10 - 0.40 | 0.50 - 0.90 | 0.05 Max | 0.05 Max |
En9 is ideal in the manufacture of sprockets, keys, small gears, machine tools, grinding balls, cylinders, cams and crankshafts, grinding balls for ball mills and ball race rings among many others.

Content (%) | 0.36 - 0.44 | 0.10 - 0.35 | 0.70 - 1.00 | 0.90 - 1.20 | 0.25 - 0.35 | 0.035 Max | 0.040 Max |
It is suitable for applications with very high loading such as engine gear boxes. Popular in the automotive sector it is suitable for the manufacture of axles, high tensile bolts and studs, propeller shaft joints, rifle and breech mechanisms for small arms and induction hardened track pins. It is the preferred grade for the Oil & Gas sector.
