Tool Steel

Cold Work Tool Steels
Equivalent Grade by Chemistry
Britain Bs970 D2
Germany DIN X155CrVMo121
USA AISI D2
Germany Werkstoff No. 1.2379

D2 steel is an air hardening, high-carbon, high-chromium tool steel. It has high wear and abrasion resistant properties. It is heat treatable and will offer a hardness in the range 55-62 HRC, and is machinable in the annealed condition. D2 steel shows little distortion on correct hardening. D2 steel’s high chromium content gives it mild corrosion resisting properties in the hardened condition. It is extremely stable in hardening and is capable of being nitrated.

Typical Applications

D2 is suitable for many cold working applications such as fine blanking tools, heavy duty press tools, punches and dies shear blades, granulating knives, slitting cutters, clipping tools thread rolling dies, moulds for abrasive compounds, forming rolls, deep drawing tools, cold extrusion tools, spinning tools.

Plastic Mould Tool Steel – P20
Equivalent Grade by Chemistry
Britain Bs970
Germany DIN 40CrMnMo7
USA AISI
Germany Werkstoff No. 1.2311

P20 tool steels are nitrided or carburized. These steels are capable of being machined into complex and large dies and molds. P20 steels are mostly used in the carburized condition. The presence of chromium and nickel enhances the toughness and hardness of P20 steels. P20 is hardened and tempered mould steel supplied at 280 - 325 BHN. It takes a good polish and may be nitrified to increase surface hardness.

Pre hardened to approximately 300 B.H (65 t.s.i) P20 requires no further heat treatment therefore avoiding risk of distortion or cracking. Although pre-hardened P20 is still capable of being machined and of giving a good polished finish.

Typical Applications

Used for quality for pressing and injection moulding tools. If the section exceeds 400mm P20 (1.2311) won't provide a consistent through hardness. Suitable for hard chrome plating and for nitriding

Hot Work Tool Steel - H13
Equivalent Grade by Chemistry
Britain Bs970 H13
Germany DIN X40CrMoV51
USA AISI H13
Germany Werkstoff No. 1.2344

H13 chromium hot-work steel is widely used in hot and cold work tooling applications. Due to its excellent combination of high toughness and fatigue resistance H13 is used more than any other tool steel in tooling applications. H13 is a versatile hot work tool steel giving good strength and wear resistance. It has good thermal shock resistance and will tolerate a degree of water cooling in service . H13 may be nitrified but care should be taken not to impart too great a depth of hardness as shock resisting capacity will be reduced.
